A fun tasting plate

Back in 2016, my wife had the idea to take a tasting plate with different varieties of apples and pears to a family gathering. It was a hit! People talked about the fruit and had fun comparing them. We had the following types:

Pear varieties:

  • Bosc
  • Seckel
  • Anjou (red)
  • Anjou (green)

Apple varieties:

  • Honeycrisp
  • Granny Smith
  • Ambrosia

Looking at this list, having a few more varieties would be good, but there might be an limit. If there are too many varieties, people could become overloaded. This reminds me of a talk I saw once on how more choice can be counterproductive. I wonder how I could estimate what this fruit limit is for people?

We could also have a contest where people first sample all the fruit, and then try to guess the variety of random samples.

I definitely would like to try something like this again if things get back to normal.
